An interview with Vernon Hill, co-founder, Metro Bank
Vernon Hill, co-founder and vice-chairman Metro Bank has launched the first bank on the British high street for over 100 years. Ahead of his appearance at our Annual Conference on 18 November, he spoke to Elen Lewis
What’s your golden rule?
I have two golden rules. 1/ Our role is to create fans, not customers. 2/ Hope is not a plan.
Who has been your biggest influence?
When I was very young, I was influenced by Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Keep it simple.
What keeps you awake at night?
Thinking about how we improve our business model and improve our delivery every day.
Which leader do you admire most and why?
Steve Jobs at Apple who has redefined and reinvented the computer and the mobile phone market.
What advice would you offer to marketing directors looking to become better leaders?
Your brand is who you are, what you are and what your customers expect.
What book is on your bedside table?
The Reagan Diaries and Delivering Happiness by Zappo’s CEO Tony Hsieh.
Tell us a secret.
My secret weapon is my wife. Her architecture and design teams have been responsible for the success of Commerce Bank in the US and Metro Bank I the UK. Design is a competitive weapon.
