Last year my handbag was stolen by a very professional thief who instantly ferreted out my clumsily disguised PIN number, raced to the cash point, extracted £500 on my First Direct debit card and then proceeded on a spending spree with my American Express card. Amex, as a credit card, was covered, but of course my debit card, being my money, wasn’t. I spoke to a supervisor – describing what happened, that I knew something about company reputations, that First Direct had a particularly good one and would they please at least split the liability. Without hesitation she said OK. Now the point of the story is only partially that the bank agreed to reimburse me for half of the loss when they had absolutely no need to. The more important point was that the woman I spoke to not only recognised a reputational opportunity (which it was since I have told many people about this tiny experience) but was empowered to make the decision on the spot.

From The Futures Company
1. The year of the big idea
2011 will be a year in which marketers pull out all the stops. Having taken out almost all available costs and facing reluctant consumers in booming and sluggish markets alike, marketers will be forced to turn to big hits and dramatic splashes to juice demand and jumpstart momentum for top-line growth.
2. Hybrid-brow
From more in the way of fusion foods and fashions to growing multi-ethnic demographics to restaurant and retail combinations to multi-purpose cleaning and personal care products to smartphone platforms that morph from one app to the next, everything from low-brow to high-brow will be some sort of hybrid.

Mid-life Crisis, Part 2
The shock of turning 65 will make the shock of turning 60 seem like a walk in the park in retrospect.
Boomers shaken means Boomers stirred
In response to the volatility, angst and disappointment of the past few years, Boomers will grab at every opportunity they can afford to reward themselves.
Reacting to excess and uncertainty, some Boomers will abruptly change their colors – growing more conservative, albeit with much thought, pain and regret.

From the Futures Company
Prediction 1: Facebook’s active user base among the under 30s begins to decline
We’ve been tracking a growing disenchantment and dipping enthusiasm for Facebook among young people for some time. One survey of teens by gaming site Roiworld shows one in five is using Facebook less; the main reason for this is ‘lack of interest’. Furthermore, the average age of a Facebook user is increasing. Could this mean that Facebook is growing old, not just growing up?
Prediction 2: There will be more people playing a single videogame together than the entire population of Wales
The current record for concurrent users of a videogame is held by the Korean Dungeon Fighter Online, at 2.2 million, only 800,000 short of the population of Wales. With the continued growth of the online games market globally, we expect this to be broken. In a marketing context, brands will inevitably strive to promote themselves more strongly and more effectively in online MMPG (massively multiplayer game) environments.

What’s your golden rule?
Nothing particularly new here. To listen well and respect other points of view. To do the right thing by your clients and your staff. To keep your promises. It seems to me that if you can do all of these consistently, you and your ideas travel further.
Who has been your biggest influence?
Oh, numerous – so I’m either easily influenced or listening well. My EMO Board colleagues are a particularly impressive bunch of practioners. I like new concepts and visual thinking – David Armano’s musings, for example. David Maister left quite an impression at Omnicom University a few years back (thanks Omnicom).
What’s your most hated business expression?
“You came second.” Delivered via email. Not an expression I know, but it makes me flinch more than any americanism.
What’s the smartest idea you ever had?
Localisation. EMO’s been doing it for 4 years, and now it’s getting sticky – which is great. Can’t claim it was all me though.
Which leader do you admire most and why?
Away from the text books I’d name John Watson, Terry Hunt and Chris Warren as individuals I’ve worked with who have all been great leaders in very different ways.
What’s your favourite word?
Couloir. Gets the adrenaline moving just saying it.
Tell us a secret
I’ve just done this with Creston plc colleagues at Ashridge (thanks Creston). What a talented bunch: we have a London Marathon top 150 finisher, a County high-jump record held for 30 years, an Opera star, and a double-act on stage with the Great Soprendo, amongst others. I’m not telling you which of those is mine…
A warm welcome to Nick who has recently joined The Marketing Society as a member. We’re looking to profile all our members here, so please do email Maddie to get involved, if we haven’t been in touch already.

Well, wait around long enough and eventually those songs reminiscing about a “white Christmas” come home to roost, causing retailer and postal delivery meltdown,
along with inter-family catastrophe as travel to/from the grandparents is disrupted [stifle that cheer].
To tide you over, here is some seasonal(ish) interweb goodliness:
The Christmas Cracker
Cheesy, tacky, crass, humourous – everything you expect from a cracker except the paper hat. And if you need a new car, well worth a look around… Ling is doing his best to simplify the jargon withn the car-buying marketplace. So bad it’s fabulous, like all the best cracker jokes.
All the trimmings
Struggling to get that last minute gift for your kids/nieces/nephews/ neighbour’s best friend’s son that shoveled the snow from your drive? Here’s a useful summary of “top 10” Christmas toys from a variety of on and offline retailers this Christmas. Sign up to Groupon and save some money with a mobile voucher at the same time.
Plum Duff
A geeky infographic treat. An amazing 3D visualisation world map of social media messaging within facebook. See if you can spot which countries can’t be defined on the map where facebook has not (yet) been able to break through. Appearing as wallpaper and screen savers across our tech departments monitors…
Which just leaves me to say thank you for reading this year and I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
